One-line definition
A sadist derives sexual or emotional pleasure from giving physical or psychological pain, within consent.
Full definition
For a sadist, the pleasure is in the giving: watching how the bottom reacts under impact, how they squirm through a piece of designed humiliation, how they visibly work through the intensity. Sadists usually top, but the two words don’t mean the same thing. Top is a position in a scene; sadist is a motivation.
One clinical note belongs here. The consensual BDSM sadist is not the same as someone with psychiatric sexual sadism disorder. Current diagnostic practice does not treat a consensual adult preference as a disorder when there is no significant distress or impairment. The clinical and legal questions start where consent is absent and harm is done.

- vs. Dominant. A Dom takes pleasure in control, a sadist in giving pain. Being one does not make someone the other.
- vs. Top. Top is just the executing position. A service top can run an entire impact scene with no sadistic enjoyment at all.
