Before the internet and the apps, the American gay leather scene built a wearable matching protocol: a handkerchief in the back pocket, where the colour announced the interest (grey for bondage, black for heavy S/M, and so on) and the side announced the role, left pocket for the top and right for the bottom. One glance across the bar told you who was looking for what.
Its practical function has long since moved to the internet, but the code lives on as heritage: handkerchiefs at leather events and pride marches are a sartorial nod to history, and parts of the community still maintain expanded colour charts.
Why it is worth knowing
The hanky code is the best historical evidence that kink communities engineer their own communication protocols. In an era when nothing could be said aloud, the community solved the first step of negotiation by design. Today’s limit lists and app tags are its descendants.
