One-line definition

Sensory overload piles on dense, layered stimulation until no single sensation can be picked out.

Full definition

Where sensory deprivation takes input away, overload adds more. Touch, sound, temperature, and rhythm get layered on top of each other until there is more coming in than the receiver can follow. People react very differently, and the same person can react differently from one day to the next. Some find it completely absorbing; others laugh uncontrollably or slip into something close to a trance. Because the response is hard to predict, both partners should negotiate beforehand and keep a stop signal within reach at all times, with a non-verbal signal agreed in case speaking becomes hard.

Risk reminder

Overload can tip into panic, dissociation, or distress. It isn’t always obvious when someone has gone from enjoying the intensity to genuinely not coping, so watch closely.
